Jewel Butterfly Quilt Pattern
This pattern is based on a 1930's quilt, but it looks equally beautiful in jewel tones. The pattern is very easy - in fact it uses only one applique shape, embellished with embroidery.
Finished size: 28 ½" x 40"
¼" seams allowed. Based on 44" wide fabric.
Cutting
Background
Cut 6 squares 10 ½" x 10 ½"
Sashings
Cut 2 strips 2 ½" by the width of the fabric
From one piece, cut 3 lengths 2 ½" x 10" (these are A pieces)
From the other piece, cut 2 lengths 2 ½" x 21 ½" (these are B pieces)
Borders
Cut 3 strips 4" by the width of the fabric
From one piece, cut 2 lengths 4" x 21 ½" (these are C pieces)
From the remaining piece, cut 2 lengths 4" x 40" (these are D pieces)
Binding
Cut 4 strips 2" by the width of the fabric
Join the strips end to end to form a long binding strip.
Construction
- Trace butterfly pattern 6 times onto iron-on fusible webbing. Iron onto the back of each of 6 fabrics for the butterflies. Cut out the shape and iron each one to a background square.

The pattern is a PDF file and you will need Adobe Acrobat to access it.
- Using embroidery thread, buttonhole stitch around the edge of each butterfly shape. Stem stitch the body, wings and antennae.
- Trim the background squares to 10" x 10".
- Join 2 squares together with sashing fabric A. Repeat for the other pairs of background fabric.
- Join the three rows of butterfly squares together with the sashing fabric B.
- Sew 2 lengths of border fabric (C) to the top and bottom of the quilt. Then sew two lengths of border fabric (D) to the sides of the quilt.
- Layer the quilt top, wadding and backing. Quilt as desired.
- Fold the binding strip in half lengthwise and press. Attach binding to quilt to complete.
