This delightful crib quilt is one of our most popular patterns, and was designed by Pam Deshon, the original owner of Patches Indooroopilly, and published in Australian Country Craft and Decorating magazine in 1998 (Vol 7, No 2) to celebrate our 10th birthday. Made from the Aunt Grace Scrapbook collection of fabrics, the quilt looks lovely made in any collection of small prints or florals.
The quilt is made of nine-patch blocks set on point within squares to give a scrappy square-in-a-square appearance.
Finished size: 62cm x 85cm
Materials:
- 1.2m of assorted prints - we used 10cm x 38cm of each of 35 different prints.
- 60cm of cream background fabric
- 25cm of print fabric for the binding - we used a yellow print
- 60cm backing fabric
- 70cm x 90cm wadding
- Sewing thread and quilting thread.
For best results, use prewashed 100% cotton fabrics.
Instructions:
A 1/4 inch seam allowance is used throughout.
Nine-patch blocks
There are two ways to construct the nine-patch blocks -
1. You can cut 157 squares, each 1 1/2 inch x 1 1/2 inch from the cream fabric, and 158 squares each 1 1/2 inch x 1 1/2 inch from assorted prints. Sew them to form nine-patch blocks, 18 with four cream squares in each block, and 17 with five cream squares in each.
2. Alternatively, cut 1 1/2 inch wide strips of fabric 7 inches long for each of 35 fabrics, and 54 strips 1 1/2 inch wide and 7 inches long of cream fabric. Sew the strips together lengthwise into sets of two (see diagram below). Cut three, 1 1/2 inch segments from each strip set and sew into two opposite nine-patch blocks.

Next, cut 2 squares of each of the 35 fabrics 3 inches x 3 inches. Cut each square in half diagnally to give 140 triangles. Sew a triangle to each side of the nine-patch blocks to make a square-within-a-square. Make sure you place a different colour on each side of each block.
Construction
To piece the blocks together, lay the squares in seven rows with five squares in each row, and arrange until you have a pleasing effect. It is preferable not to have two of the same colour side by side.
Sew the square units into rows with five squares in each.
Press the seams in rows 1, 3, 5 and 7 to the right, and the seams in rows 2, 4 and 6 to the left. When the rows are sewn together, the seams will butt against each other and hold each other in place. Sew the rows together to form the quilt top.
To add the borders, cut two strips of cream fabric 2 1/2 inches wide and 20 1/2 inches long. Sew to the top and bottom of the quilt top. Cut two strips of cream fabric, each 2 1/2 inches wide and 34 inches long. Sew one strip to each side of the quilt.
Quilting
Place the backing, the wadding and the quilt top together. Pin with safety pins. Machine quilt, using a walking foot on your sewing machine, or quilt by hand as desired.
Binding
Cut 2 inch wide strips of the binding print to fit each side and the top and bottom of the quilt. Press in half lengthways. Stitch to the quilt, the trim excess fabric. Fold binding to the back of the quilt and slip stitch in position. Repeat for the sides of the quilt, leaving an inch at each corner to fold under and finish neatly. Slip stitch to the back of the quilt and ladder stitch together the corner edges.
