This is a quick and easy to make wallhanging, cot quilt or floor mat using iron-on applique. The quilt looks great made in bright navy and tartans, or use corduroy and flannel for a soft snuggle quilt.
Requirements
- 80cm navy background fabric
- Selection of fabrics for your teddies - you will need square quarters of at least four different tartans
- 3m 3/4" wide tartan ribbon
- Vlisofix for iron-on applique
- Embroidery floss
Instructions
- Make templates of the bear pattern and the heart pattern.
- Cut out background fabric to measure 75cm x 90cm.
- Mark a line 15cm in from the edge of the background fabric all the way around the quilt. This line locates the centre of the ribbon border.
- Iron pieces of vlisofix to the back of pieces of the tartan fabric large enough to cut four bear pieces and 22 hearts
- Draw four bears, and 22 hearts on the tartan fabric pieces - for the best result, trace the bears on the cross-grain of the fabric, and the hearts with a mixture of straight and cross-grains.
- Cut out the bears, peel off the backing paper, and iron them on to the centre of the quilt as shown in the photograph.
- Cut out the hearts, peel off the backing paper, position them around the border of the quilt and iron on.
- Buttonhole stitch around the bears and hearts, adding a bow tie, bow or patch to add interest to the bears.
- Machine stitch each side of the ribbon along the marked line.
- Add backing and wadding. Quilt around the bears, hearts, and ribbon border.
- Bind the quilt with tartan bias.
